Amtrak is Improving Reliability for the Future

Earlier this week, Amtrak, NJ TRANSIT (NJT) and Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) resumed regular weekday schedules, marking the end of the summer of 2017 – or as we like to say the Summer of Renewal. We know many regional commuters are relieved to have their regularly scheduled train service operational again.

With this important accelerated renewal work behind us, we offer our gratitude and appreciation for your patience, your flexibility, and your support as we worked around-the-clock to complete the work on schedule. To the engineering and construction crews responsible for this complex and intensive track, signal and switch work, we thank you for your dedication and commitment to completing this work safely and on time. Also, we thank the operations and transportation professionals at Amtrak, LIRR and NJT for developing reliable schedules for all Penn Station users during this period. Last, but certainly not least, we also thank the front line employees from all the railroads on trains and in the stations for their service to customers.

This renewal work is one element of Amtrak’s plan to modernize our stations, infrastructure and equipment on the Northeast Corridor (NEC). New Acela trainsets that will provide more frequency and smoother rides are on their way. Passengers will see refreshed Northeast Regional coaches with new seats, carpet, improved lighting and other enhancements later this fall and in 2018, pulled by our new electric locomotive fleet. The much anticipated construction of the Moynihan Train Hall is underway and the Gateway Program to preserve and expand rail capacity into New York City is ready to begin construction.

As we mark the conclusion of this intense two-month work period, we must remind everyone that much more work remains and Amtrak is ready to build the infrastructure of the future. We look forward to working with our federal and state elected officials to address the critical infrastructure issues facing our country.

Ensuring the safest, most reliable and pleasant customer experience are our highest priorities for our passengers. We thank you for your business and we hope to see you soon on one of our Amtrak trains. Learn more about the work that was completed at Amtrak.com/NYPrenewal.
