The Texas Eagle travels daily between Chicago and San Antonio, taking you through major cities from Austin to Dallas. And connecting service between San Antonio and Los Angeles is available three times a week via the Sunset Limited. Here’s five reasons you should definitely put this trip on your bucket list!
1. Spot a Historic Town
Amtrak’s new stop in Hope, Arkansas was just added in 2013 to the Texas Eagle route. Before that, it was a small town with a big claim to fame. It’s the birthplace of America’s 42nd president, Bill Clinton. For those interested in hopping off to check out Clinton’s hometown, the train rolls through the city bright and early at 5:09 a.m. each morning heading to Austin and then at 9:18 p.m. each night heading to Chicago. It’s also worth mentioning that both trips earn some major Amtrak Guest Rewards points.
2. Enjoy a Meal on a Train
Having a great meal on the Texas Eagle is like no other dining you’ve done before. Along with the gorgeous scenery outside your window, we serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, and those occasions are a great way to meet your fellow passengers, break up long trips and experience train travel at its best.
Passengers who have booked roomettes or rooms have their meals included and must bring their tickets with them to meals. Passengers riding in the coach section do not have their meals included but are free to walk to the dining car to make a reservation. So come on down!
3. Meet Our Fabulous Staff
One of the best perks on a long-distance train is you get a dedicated train attendant when you book in a sleeper car. It’s similar to room service in a hotel but much, much better. Train attendants book meal reservations for you, make and take down your bed, carry your luggage, tell you when your stop is coming up and keep you company when you want to chat. They’re great and FREE with any sleeper car reservation.
For customers with Coach reservations, there’s also a dedicated train attendant for your section of the train. They help you get on and off the train and can answer questions during your trip.
4. See the Wide Open Spaces
Everything is bigger in Texas, including the views. When you ride the Texas Eagle, you’ll wind through the Land of Lincoln, across the Mississippi River, and through the Ozarks to Little Rock and the piney woods of East Texas. Beyond that, there’s Dallas, Austin (home of the University of Texas), and finally San Antonio, where the nightlife of the Riverwalk attract Tweeters from all over the world.
5. Capture Instagram-Worthy Views of the St. Louis Arch
You’ll love checking out the 630-foot-tall St. Louis Arch from our observation car. That’s the car with floor to ceiling windows, giving them their nickname “sightseer lounges.” They bring daydreaming out the window to a whole new level … literally. That’s because when you’re in one you’re actually on the second floor of the train.
The bonus? There’s no assigned seating, and it offers you the best spot to photograph the Gateway Arch!
