What is Amtrak Residency?
Amtrak Residency was designed to allow creative professionals who are passionate about train travel and writing to work on their craft in an inspiring environment. Round-trip train travel will be provided on an Amtrak long-distance route. Each resident will have use of a private sleeping roomette, equipped with a desk, a bed and a window to watch the American countryside. Onboard meals will also be offered to all residents in the dining car aboard the train.

We received more than 600 applications.
How many semi-finalists were chosen?
115 semi-finalists were selected.
How were the semi-finalists chosen?
Semi-finalists were chosen by a panel of judges based on the quality and completeness of their application package.
Who were the judges for Amtrak Residency?
The judging panel included two former Amtrak Residents, a published writer and an Amtrak representative.
How were the final Residents selected?
The judging panel evaluated applications based on the following criteria: originality and creativity of writing sample, quality of writing sample, and answers to application questions.
What type of artist makeup the finalist?
The residents represent a variety of disciplines within the writing community including journalist, novelists and poets, to name a few.
How will Amtrak determine which routes the residents will travel on?
We will work with each resident to plan his or her individual travel itinerary. The dates and routes for each trip will be determined in partnership with Amtrak Revenue Management to ensure that under-sold service is utilized for residency travel spots.
What is required of the individuals that receive an Amtrak Residency?
There are no requirements for the writers during their trip.
Will there be a residency program in the years to come?
Amtrak continues to actively evaluate the program in hopes of continuing the program. An announcement will be made early next year with program extension information.
