It’s the home-stretch of summer. Some lucky ones may have the time to go on longer vacations, but for most of us, that’s just not an option. Below are some cool events and destinations you can zip to by train!

2018 Portland Adult Soapbox Derby: 8/18/18

Watch the Portland summertime tradition in which adults wheel in their home-grown coaster cars and race down Mount Tabor. This soapbox derby is free!
How to get there: take the Cascades train to Union Station.

Reclamation! Pan-African Works featuring Kehinde Wiley

The Beth Rudin DeWoody Collection at the Taubman Museum of Art in Roanoke, VA  features over one hundred works from various media highlighting the global migration of peoples across the world. Featured is Kehinde Wiley, an artist most recognized for his portrait of former president Barack Obama.
How to get there: ride into Amtrak’s new Roanoke station!

Cosmic Glimmer

Want to spice up your Instagram? Visit Art Space in Raleigh, NC to see a very #Instagrammable art installation. Cosmic Glimmer, created by Dana Lynn Harper, is an immersive piece that shines and glistens as you walk through the room.
How to get there: depending on your starting point, you’ll either take the Piedmont or the Carolinian.

For thrill-seekers, here are different parks and attractions you can get to via Amtrak:

Universal’s Islands of Adventure

Voted Trip Advisor’s #1 Amusement park in the US, Universal’s Islands of Adventure has attractions for all ages and interests.
How to get there: drive up your car to the Auto Train and take it with you on the rails down to Orlando, FL.

NY State Fair

Take it back to the classics and visit the New York State Fair. Starting Wednesday, Aug. 22 through Monday, Sept. 3, you can enjoy some of the best food and entertainment the state has to offer!
How to get there: Skip tolls, traffic and parking fees via select Empire Service (Trains 281, 283 and 284) and Maple Leaf (Trains 63 and 64) trains, which will make daily stops at the State Fair (in between stops at Rochester and Syracuse stations), adjacent to the Fairgrounds. Pro tip: The New York State Fair station uses the station code NYF.

Disneyland

If you’re on the West Coast, this is where the magic happens. This summer, travel for less on the Amtrak® Pacific Surfliner® and enjoy limited-time savings on Disneyland® Resort theme park admission to experience Pixar Fest through September 3, 2018.
How to get there: The Pacific Surfliner train travels to Southern California’s top destinations including Anaheim, the gateway to the Happiest Place on Earth.
