A New Union Station Passenger Concourse

A New Union Station Passenger Concourse

Over 37 million people pass through Washington Union station each year, making it one of the busiest intercity and commuter rail stations in the country and we understand that after more than 100 years of service as the getaway to the Nation’s Capital, the passenger concourse, could use an upgrade.

The good news? Changes are-a coming! We are excited to announce that Amtrak is funding the Concourse Modernization Project, which means the passenger concourse will undergo a transformation to make it brighter, more modern, and a more accessible station for all travelers.

More Amenities for the Modern Traveler

We know you’ve got places to go and people to see, which is why we are doing what we can to ensure that construction minimally impacts your day-to-day usage of the station. When construction is completed in 2020, the Union Station concourse will include:

  • An additional 20,000 square feet of new customer space—doubling the existing space
  • Upgraded and expanded ClubAcela lounge for business and Acela Express customers
  • New boarding areas with additional seating and new restrooms
  • Architectural details that brighten the space with natural light

The intercity and commuter concourse, home to the MARC and VRE trains, will also be reconfigured to provide greater comfort to local and regional travelers, and ease overall congestion.

The concourse modernization project is part of our forward-thinking investment in the future of rail travel. This milestone for Washington Union Station, the Northeast Corridor and our customers, is critical to regional connectivity and economic growth and will ensure a premier travel experience for all Union Station customers.
