Check Out Our 2015 Sustainability Report

sustainAt Amtrak, we take our commitment to the environment seriously. Finding new ways to work more efficiently, we’re getting greener every year. So why does sustainability matter to us? We have the great privilege of being America’s railroad, and as part of that privilege, we know we have the responsibility to protect and conserve resources for future generations. We’re excited to share these our 2015 Sustainability Report. Here’s some more important stats on our program:

  • In 2015, we introduced 33 new energy efficient ACS-64 electric locomotives into service on the Northeast Corridor, leading to more reliable service, reduced fuel consumption and reducing our air emissions. And we didn’t stop there!
  • We also reduced our electricity consumption at our largest facilities, reaching a 4.7% reduction of electricity consumption for FY15, significantly surpassing our 1% electricity reduction goal for electricity consumption. We also significantly exceeded our 1% locomotive fuel reduction goal by over 836,000 gallons for FY15.

As part of our ongoing efforts to provide high-quality, environmentally-friendly  service, Amtrak introduced an expanded bike service program for passengers on several long distance routes.  By the end of 2015, we launched this passenger-friendly bike service on 19 routes. More bikes means less cars, and we’re happy to join the effort to help everyone reduce their carbon footprint.

This year, Amtrak signed the International Union of Railways Railway Climate Responsibility Pledge to demonstrate a commitment to reducing energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, publicly reporting data, stimulating modal shift to rail and actively communicating climate-friendly initiatives.
