Amtrak City Pairs: DC>Chicago

Amtrak City Pairs: DC>Chicago

We’re here to tell you about one of our best short distance trips: America’s Capital to the Windy City.

Here’s why our Capitol Limited passengers love this ride: You board late afternoon and then settle into your roomette or bedroom with a good book. Shortly after the train leaves the station, a friendly sleeping car attendant comes by to take your dinner reservations. You head to the Dining Car and nosh on steak and mashed potatoes, veggie lasagna, or a roasted chicken with rice pilaf. You can take wine or a cocktail back to your room along with dessert, and watch the beautiful country side roll by. As the sun sets, your attendant comes by to turn down your bed so that the train rocks you to sleep better than a baby in the backseat of a car.  You wake up just in time for hot french toast or a tasty omelette before exploring one of the Midwest’s most vibrant cities.

So what do you do when you get to Chi Town or DC? Let’s start with our Nation’s Capital. Get political and head to the White House for a tour, then check out the Newseum. Dine at local hot spots like The Hamilton or Rosa Mexicana, then finish the day with a cocktail at POV Lounge with  stellar views of the entire city. Don’t miss a stroll along the Tidal Basin for more monumental views, and leave plenty of time to explore Union Station before your train departs — it’s full of historic architecture and shops.

Need reasons to ride to the Windy City? There’s lots. Check out the Ferris wheel at Navy Pier for some stunning views of Lake Michigan. When you get hungry, discover the wonders of deep dish pizza at Lou Malnati’s. Since Chicago was home to famous gangster Al Capone, pay homage to the city’s past with a visit to a secret speakeasy bar. Wander over to the Art Institute to see a Van Gogh up close, and then close out the day with a #BeanSeflie at Millenium Park.
