5 Ways to Find Zen This Holiday Season

November is usually when people start to get a little frazzled about the holidays. Preparing for house guests, planning your holiday travel and figuring out if this is the year to try turducken are all real life stressors. The joys of creating #AmtrakStories as you travel to Nana’s house can sometimes get lost in the hustle and bustle that surrounds holiday prep. But at Amtrak, we’re all about enjoying the journey and encourage you to find your personal moments of zen this holiday season. Not sure where to start? No biggie. Here are your five ways to find zen this holiday season.

  1. Plan Ahead, Build in Buffer Time
No one likes rushing through the station trying to make the train. So skip the dramatic dash and plan ahead. We recommend arriving a minimum of 30-45 minutes before the train is scheduled to roll out. But if you’re new to the station, plan to check baggage or want to grab a snack before your trip, earlier is better.
  2. Turn Off Your Phone
Yes, this is not easy. You’re not the only one addicted to those amazing devices that keep us connected. But we promise, giving your digital besties a break is worth it. Once you get comfy and cozy in your seat, turn it off and enjoy the Amtrak views. Maybe chat it up with your seat mate, read a book or take a nap. We could go on and on about ways to enjoy your digital detox, but we’ll let you find your own way to the serenity of a cellphone free zone.
  1. Visit the Observation Car
If you haven’t experienced our observation car yet, make sure this is something you do immediately. Floor to ceiling windows with views for days are just one of the reasons why many call this their favorite train car. Open seating for all fosters a unique sense of community. Many riders strike up conversations with each other, while others wake up early to catch the sunrise. We can’t stress it enough, the observation car is the perfect place to zen out before dinner time.
  1. Dinner (Or Breakfast or Lunch) in the Diner
Speaking of dinner…there’s nothing like not having to cook it. Especially when you might be gearing up to  cook a ton for the holidays. So why not indulge a bit and let us cook for you. Settle in the dining car and enjoy the views as you satisfy your appetite on our railroad French toast for breakfast and maybe the signature steak for dinner. The holidays aren’t the holidays without food, so kick it off when you ride and dine with us.
  1. Sleep In
Let the back and forth sway of the train car rock you to sleep all the way to your next stop. When you book sleeping accommodations with your ticket that’s exactly what happens. So go on, coincidently forget to set your alarm and catch a few extra zzz’s before its game on at Grandma’s house.
