Baggage 101: What Can I Bring on Board with Amtrak?

Curious about baggage policy? Not sure what to bring, or how much can carry on board? Read on to get the 411 on Baggage 101.

You + Two Bags = No Extra Charge

Unlike many transportation options, traveling with Amtrak is twice as nice with our generous baggage policy. When you travel with us, you can bring:

  • one personal item, 25 lbs. (12 kg) and 14 x 11 x 7 inches
  • two carry-on items, 50 lbs. (23 kg) and 28 x 22 x 14 inches each (Pacific Surfliner: up to 28 x 22 x 11 inches each)
  • two additional bags for $20 each

For those Amtrak families traveling with infants under the age of two, your baby items (strollers and diaper bags) will not count towards your carry-on limit.

Rock n’ Roll on Board

The music doesn't have to stop just because you're traveling with us. That's why we have an open-door policy for small instruments (flutes, trumpets, clarinets, etc.) that fit in a passenger's luggage or the overhead luggage racks. In lieu of a piece of baggage, medium sized instruments, like guitars and small saxophones, can be carried onboard for a $10 service fee. Oversized instruments (cellos, tubas) which do not fit in luggage racks may be carried on with the purchase of an additional full revenue seat.

Surf’s Up!

When you travel on our Pacific Surfliner, California dreamin' is a given. But next time — bring your surfboard and wakeboard, so you can actually "hang ten." Just put it in a full-length protective cover, and you can carry it on board in place of a piece of baggage. If checking your boards are more of your thing, you can do that too — with a $10 service fee.
