Writers Selected for Amtrak Residency Program

Writers Selected for Amtrak Residency Program

From the tens of thousands of responses on Twitter showing interest in the program, to the more than 16,000 applications we received. We couldn’t be more excited to announce the 24 writers who will participate in this year’s Amtrak Residency program. The applications received for the program were outstanding and made the job of selecting just 24 writers a challenge for our judges. The writers selected for the program offer a diverse representation of the writing community and hail from across the country.

From the beginning of the launch of the Amtrak Residency program this spring, we have been humbled by the overwhelming response not to just the program, but to Amtrak’s long-distance service. Our long distance trains don’t just connect small towns to big cities, they connect families, friends and loved ones. They offer a chance to connect with other travelers, experience the American countryside without the stress of driving, and to unplug and take in the inspirational experience. Our trains help tie the fabric of this country together and we are excited for the 24 residents to experience the beauty of long-distance train travel and hopefully find inspiration for their writing along the way.

Thank you to all that applied to the program, to those who have provided your feedback for the program along the way, to our judges who helped with the incredibly challenging task of selecting the final residents, and to our 24 residents who we hope will find their experience aboard Amtrak rewarding.

Meet our 24 2014 Amtrak residents and the judges who helped us in the selection process.

The application for the 2015 Amtrak Residency program is now open and available here.

I'm interested in an artists residency with Amtrak - would you ever offer this? I'd love to make a series of paintings based on a trip across the USA. I'm an illustrator and think it could make for great promotional material for Amtrak?

This is a terrific idea! Now that we know what Amtrak got out of it, why not a little more about how writers might benefit? And as below (other kinds of artists), why not choose emerging writers as the benefit would definitely be bilateral? The output shouldn't be "How Amtrak allowed me to spend my summer vacation," but about the places visited and the means of travel that is uniquely Amtrak. I'm thinking Steinbeck's Travels with Charley here.

If there is a second year, could it be open to other kinds of artists? I am an interdisciplinary contemporary artist who works in multiple mediums including painting, performance, and now social media. This sounds amazing!

I am disappointed I found out about this too late. Will there be another round of chosen writers?

How does one apply for the 2nd year?  It states 'entry form' & then it just leads to the 'current' writers who seem great!,  but what's up Amtrack for the 'on-going?  Thx much on behalf of all writers out there in America!  :)

If they don't respond, it's probably just another flash in the pan advertising scheme, unfortunately. There have been several of these.

To the folks at #AmtrakResidency - you have put together an amazing set of established writers to write about Amtrak - and that is great.  However, you should also look at regular folks who are avid train enthusiasts and decent writers - with greater diversity of experience - to also participate in the program!  I hope you are able to consider this for the next round of selections.  Thanks!

Hello! Having just bought tickets on the Coast Starlight & the Southwest Chief to get to another residency, it occurred to me I haven't heard a peep about the Amtrak writers' residency since the first year. Will there be a second year? If so, when/how can we apply?

@Lydia Swartz Thanks for that question - I have it too. I'd love to participate in the selection process for the Year 2 as well.  Hopefully someone will respond to this.
