USA Rail Pass, Let’s Explore
We all know America is beautiful, but seeing it from sea level is truly breathtaking.
With our Amtrak USA Rail Pass, we give adventurous souls the opportunity to create the epic rail journey of their dreams. But before you pack your bags, there are a few things you need to know. Here are five USA Rail Pass knowledge nuggets just for you.
Day vs. Segments
After you decide you’re ready for your Amtrak adventure, you have to decide the length of travel. We offer three options: 15 days with up to 8 segments, 30 days with up to 12 segments or 45 days with up to 18 segments. But what the heck does that mean? The days are consecutive and start with the first travel segment. A travel segment is anytime a rider gets on then off of the train.
Example: USA Rail Pass rider, Joe Schmiden (see what we did there) has a 15 day USA Rail Pass. He travels on our Sunset Limited from San Antonio to Los Angeles, explores Los Angeles then hops on the Coast Starlight and travels to Seattle. Joe Schmiden has only used 2 segments of eight.
A Ticket To Ride
Lean in, because this knowledge nugget is really important. After you purchase your USA Rail Pass, you still need to reserve your seats and pick up your tickets at an Amtrak staffed station for each train ride on your journey. Plan ahead and book as far in advance as possible to avoid sold out trains or additional costs. Simply reserve your seat on the train and get a special USA Rail Pass Ticket.
Upgrades On Demand
Our USA Rail Pass entitles riders to one coach seat. However, if you want to upgrade to business class or for one of our sleeping accommodations options, you can with an additional charge. To do so, just inquire when you reserve your pass.
6 Months to Travel
Wait what? Yup, when planning your Amtrak USA Rail Pass adventure, you have 6 months or 180 days to complete your excursion. So plan away! Choose your cities, pick your routes, book early and get ready to make some memories.
Adults aren’t the only ones who get to have all the fun. With us, adults can travel with up to two of their favorite little rail fan ages 2-12 years old and pay half. Of course you can travel with more than two kids, but only two qualify for the discount when accompanied by an adult Rail Pass rider.
