I did the Zephyr back in '98 and it was amazing. Wrote about it here: http://jetteroheller.wordpress.com/2014/03/10/amtrakresidency-i-basically-did-this-and-it-was-awesome/
California Zephyr Named Fan Favorite
Haven’t had a chance to experience the Zephyr yet? Here are a few things you can expect as captured by our Photo of the Week artists!
Making Family Memories: Dragana snapped this heart-warming pic while riding in the observation car. The 51-hour trip from Chicago to Emeryville, Calif., means tons of quality time onboard.
Plenty to Blog About: Alex blogged throughout his trip on the Zephyr at his website, keeping fans & followers updated throughout his adventure from the Bay Area to Chicago.
Time for Quiet Reflection: Irvine caught this Moment of Zen aboard the California Zephyr as the train crossed over the route's breathtaking landscape, which includes the plains of Nebraska, the Rockies and even the desert of Salt Lake City.

I would guess the Zephyr makes the return trip from Emeryville to Chicago? That would be my direction to go. I've never been to Chicago, and what better way to arrive than by train.
Yes! The Zephyr is definitely the best. Going through the Sierra Nevadas is my favorite part of the trip.
I go the GN route on the Empire Builder-but am not surprised the CZ got the top honors. The views across Colorado must be better than North Dakota! LoL!!!
Never been on the CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR.....Usually take the EMPIRE BUILDER a lot when I go to Chicago to transfer to STL...but would love to take a trip on the ZEPHYR....:)
What's my favorite part about riding the California Zephyr? The anticipation that as early as sometime next year i'll be able to ride it for the first time and check ANOTHER long distance Amtrak route off my "bucket list"! If it's HALF as awesome as last month's "Empire Builder" experience, it'll be worth every nickel!
@DanielLilly Sounds like you're excited for your upcoming trip. We can't wait to have you out on the rails with us!
