Amtrak CEO Thanks Fellow Veterans

Joe Boardman, Amtrak CEO

I am proud to say that I am a Vietnam veteran, and I reserve a special place in my heart for holidays like Veterans Day. Today, I hope you will join me in thanking America's veterans.

Since our inception, Amtrak has had a close relationship with the armed services, spanning several international conflicts and multiple generations. As an organization we recently committed to ensuring that 25 percent of our new hires will be veterans by 2015. It is essential that we give back to the men and women who have served and I am honored to continue to welcome veterans into the Amtrak family.

Speaking directly to my brothers and sisters in arms, I want to say thank you for your service. For the families and friends of those who made the ultimate sacrifice, I am humbled by the high price you paid for our freedom.

I hope you’ll join me today in showing appreciation to those currently serving our country around the globe and those that have served in the past.

Mr. Boardman

I am a service conected disable vet. Vietnam 1965. Until a recent experience with Amtrak, I would have recommended it hightly to anyone and did so.  In July of this year, I made reservations with amtrak for a trip to Montreal. The agent offered to handle all travel needs including layover hotels in New York and Montreal.   The train part was good. One exception was the hotel reservations, which I paid amtrak for, were made for the wrong date - August instead of October. We did not find this out untill we arrived at the hotel in NY at 7:00 pm. The hotel said sorry but no room. I called amtrak immediately that night. Your people said sorry they could do nothing. The hotel then suddenly came up with a room for $577 a night. We had already paid amtrak $220 for a room. So a night in NY cost me $762. Same thing happened in Monteral. We had to pay $272 extra.

I called Amtrak upon my return home and was told that we should have checked dates and Amtrak could do nothing. Guess what I tell folks now about Amtrak. Is this the way you intend on treating vets?

If you are interested, I have all records and receipts with complete dates, names, and transactions.
