#AmtrakVets Debuts on West Coast Today!

Today our #AmtrakVets initiative is making its West Coast debut at a hiring event at Los Angeles Union Station. The event is part of a multi-year corporate commitment to ensure 25 percent of our new hires are veterans by 2015!

“The leadership, reliability and high-tech skills veterans bring to the job are a great resource to the operation of America’s Railroad,” says Amtrak CEO and Vietnam veteran Joe Boardman. “I’m honored and proud to add more of our country’s service men and women to the Amtrak team.”

Since announcing the commitment in June, Amtrak has participated in several military career fairs with partners including Hire Our Heroes, RecruitMilitary and General Electric, which launched its own veterans hiring initiative called Get Skills to Work last fall.

“Our goal is to develop, acquire and retain talent that will make this company even better,” says Amtrak Chief of Human Capital Barry Melnkovic. “Employees with military experience help us do that.”

Amtrak joins a network of companies committed to helping returning veterans by hiring them into highly skilled and reliable careers. In honor of the company’s own veteran employees and for all those than have served in past conflicts, Amtrak custom painted a GE locomotive that will travel the country supporting Amtrak recruiting efforts.

The customized GE Genesis diesel engine has a red, white and blue motif with a specialty designed America’s Railroad Salutes Our Veterans logo and 50 stars around the bottom to honor the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War.

The Los Angeles job fair today is free for veterans, active duty military members, guard and reserve members, and military spouses. It will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 800 N. Alameda St.
