Want to Go from Blacksburg to NYC? Here’s How!

Lane Stadium

We’re less than a month away from the beginning of the fall semester (woohooo college!).

To celebrate that fact, it’s important that Virginia college students know about their new options for getting from Blacksburg, Roanoke and Lynchburg to the bright lights of NYC or the great internships in D.C.

Here’s the quick and dirty of what you need to know:

  • The Smart Way Connector buses in Roanoke and Blacksburg can get you to the (lovely) Lynchburg train station, where you can board the Amtrak Northeast Regional train, which takes you to major stops along the East Coast from D.C. to Boston.
  • You can easily book a ticket from Blacksburg or Roanoke to any stop along the Northeast Corridor straight from Amtrak.com.
  • The Smart Way Connector bus currently costs $4, which will be added to your train fare when you book online at Amtrak.com.
  • The Smart Way Connector buses will be available on all holidays, including Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Memorial Day and July 4th, which is awesome news since Amtrak trains run 365 days a year. Basically we know you got places to be and people to see.

As an added bonus for alumni on the Northeast Corridor, Smart Way Connector buses even run routes to Virginia Tech game days on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. That means you can book a ticket straight from Madison Square Garden to Squires Student Center! How cool is that?

The extra price for a sleeping room is the same whether 1 or 2 are in it.  So get a companion and split the cost, both of you will still get meals included.  Also, when you pay extra for a sleeping room, your base fare may drop to less than the coach fare on a sold out train.  Check and compare carefully, the total price on a different day may be more affordable.

This is something I'm going to do when we (Miami) goes to up to Blacksburg in 2014.

Very true. Plan ahead and be flexible; e.g., a day either way can save a brindle.
