Dear Mr. Boardman,
Let me tell what my daughter and I are NOT doing this weekend; taking the train from Emeryville, CA to Reno, NV and return. Why? Because the Amtrack system seems unable to estimate and position itself for increased ridership - during the school vacation/holiday time. I was told you were "all sold out" by the nice woman on the telephone (because I got frustrated by the website and the Ask Julie silliness) when I inquired.
Are there no extra cars to be put in service - even from other less traveled areas - when seats are scarce? Does Amtrack not have the systems in place to recognize growing demand (or even seasonal patterns?) and then respond quickly so that revenue is increased and customers are given great service?
The airlines are now known for reducing capacity (planes and seats) and then screwing up multiple created charges to milk their customers.
You hopefully realize that we love train travel and are forced to put up with airline misbehavior and wish you all the best in spite of the idealogues running the Republican party and the House.
Being an older person I have watched bus transit systems cut hours of operation and bus routes only to then announce that ridership was down. Duh?
